MEDA101 Assessment 1 (Echoes of Litter)

This sound snapshot explores a residential area in fairy meadow, at first you are greeted with an eerie sound of puddles underfoot and the sound of cars that are manipulated to create a disturbing low wind like sound effect. I manipulated the sounds in such a way to explore the surprisingly grotesque nature of the area in which I recorded the sounds. Although one might expect cars and dogs barking, instead I was greeted with a bunch of litter, broken bottles and cans and decided to convey the dense litter pollution of the area in the sound snapshot. At the end of the soundscape there’s also a clear signal of a can being crushed underfoot. It’s important that the point of this soundscape is to convey the visual and olfactory pollution of the area from litter conveyed through sound.

MEDA101 Sound editing

All necessary sounds have now been recorded, wind proved to be a strong annoyance but I managed to collect sufficient clean sound footage.
The editing of the sounds thus far has gone well, I’ve managed collect a vast variety of creaks and scrapes as well as interesting atmospheric sounds such as cars and wind and bushes these subtle sounds have proved vital in crafting this sound snapshot.
I’ve tested the snapshot thus far with a heavy reverb and am unsure whether the reverb is effective or even at all necessary but I’m quite pleased with the piece thus far.

Currently there are 21 layers of sound within this sound snapshot!

It’s quite enjoyable to listen to this piece as within it I’ve attempted to contrast some low atmospheric legato like sounds with some short attack high ones.

Here’s my first test

MEDA101 Response to Gail Priest Lecture

After discussing sound a lecture from Gail Priest I’ve gained an interesting inspiration into examples of different and diverse soundscapes and a better understanding into what a signal to noise ratio is. I’ve considered different options such as a slowed down ambience and the reversal of sounds and have experimented with these techniques in audacity sony vegas and adobe audition

MEDA101 Sound snapshot update

Today, I used my phone to record sounds around the house and experimented editing these sounds in audacity and adobe audition, interesting sounds were created when reversing the sound of a recliner chair’s mechanism and slowing it down.

Further more after a few tutorials I feel I have a decent understanding of how to use the zoom microphone recorders effectively and manipulate them to create sounds.

I do still however unfortunately, still struggle to grasp basic shortcuts or even processes on Mac.
